Love as Strong as Death

Song of Songs 8:5–14

Today’s passage expresses the completion of love. In verse 6, it says:

"Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its jealousy unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame."

The verse says, “Love is as strong as death.” This means that not even death can stop love. We sometimes see this kind of language when describing the love between a man and a woman. No matter how much people try to block that love, they cannot. In some cases, lovers even go so far as to give their lives to protect their love.

This is the nature of God’s love.
God’s love was revealed through Jesus Christ. John 3:16 says:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

God gave His only Son, and paid the price of His death to save us.
That’s how much He loves us.
God did not spare even death for the sake of love.

But love is not one-sided. It’s a relationship.
God has loved us with such deep and sacrificial love,
so our love for Him should be just as undivided.
We must not let our hearts be distracted by other things—
not by money, fame, or success.
Nothing should shake our love for God.

Let’s continue to verse 7:

“Many waters cannot quench love;
rivers cannot sweep it away.
If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love,
it would be utterly scorned.”

Not even many waters can quench the fire of love.
And no amount of wealth can buy true love.

Romans 8:35 says:

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?”

Even trouble, hardship, persecution, or danger
cannot separate us from the love of Christ.
No matter how strong the threats we face,
Christ’s loveGod’s love—is always with us.

Romans 8:38–39 goes on to say:

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life,
neither angels nor demons,
neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of God
that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

It says “nothing else in all creation”
That includes angels, rulers, the present, the future,
but also money, fame, and anything else.
Nothing can separate us from God’s love.

But the key is what Paul says: “I am convinced.”
This love is already directed toward us, but we must be convinced of it.
There are times when our hearts turn away from God’s love—
because of material temptations, or because of suffering,
our confidence in God’s love can be shaken.
But even when we are shaken,
God’s love remains unchanging.

Let us not forget this.
Let us live with confidence in this love—
feeling it, enjoying it, being empowered by it.
Whatever your circumstances or your condition today,
never forget:
God still loves you deeply and passionately.

Let us live this day as those who are dearly loved.
